The unconventional simplicity of the language and the choice of realistic situations from common rural life, the collection challenged established standards of poetry. For a long time Wordsworth and Coleridge were to pursued by an enthusiasm which began over Lyrical Ballads. It was to explain and justify his unconventionality that Wordsworth wrote his most famous prose composition, the Preface to the second edition of the Ballads (1800).
